Scientific formats for geospatial data
نویسنده
چکیده
The volume, complexity, variability and accessibility of geospatial of digital geospatial data pose formidable challenges for the National Archives. Scientific and engineering communities faces many of the same challenges in managing large, complex digital data collections. This study examines gridded and vector geospatial data through the prism of scientific data management, with particular emphasis to scientific data formats and software. Geospatial data is characterized in terms of data types, size and storage requirements. Scientific data formats are described, including some of the benefits of using scientific data formats and software. Sample geospatial data types are mapped to corresponding scientific data structures, in particular those supported by HDF5 and HDFEOS 5. The paper concludes with a report on experiments that are underway to assess storage and access implications of using HDF5 and HDF-EOS 5 for sample geospatial data types that are of particular interest to NARA.

Quantitative versus Qualitative Geospatial Data in Spatial Modelling and Decision Making
In general, geospatial data can be divided into two formats, raster and vector formats. A raster consists of a matrix of cells where each cell contains a value representing quantitative information, such as temperature, vegetation intensity, land use/cover, elevation, etc. A vector data consists of points, lines and polygons representing location or distance or area of landscape features in gra...
متن کاملHow to Apply the Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL) Properly to Parallel Geospatial Raster I/O?
Input/output (I/O) of geospatial raster data often becomes the bottleneck of parallel geospatial processing due to the large data size and diverse formats of raster data. The open-source Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL), which has been widely used to access diverse formats of geospatial raster data, has been applied recently to parallel geospatial raster processing. This article first...
متن کاملMetadata Capture and Geospatial Records
When the electronic records that you are trying to preserve are unique, complex, and storage-hungry, they will quickly put an institution’s feet to the fire to come up with solutions. This has been the case for Utah, North Carolina, and Kentucky as we have tried to grapple with the needs and requirements of geospatial records in the grant-sponsored GeoMAPP project (http://www.geomapp.net). Much...
متن کاملA geospatial web portal for sharing and analyzing greenhouse gas data derived from satellite remote sensing images
Greenhouse gas data collected by different institutions throughout the world have significant scientific values for global climate change studies. Due to the diversity of data formats and different specifications of data access interfaces, most of those data should be first downloaded onto a local machine before they can be used. To overcome this limitation, we present a geospatial web portal f...
متن کاملDigital Preservation of Geospatial Data
The selection, acquisition, and management of digital data are now part and parcel of the work librarians handle on a day-to-day basis. While much thought goes into this work, little consideration may be given to the long-term preservation of the collected data. Digital data cannot be retained for the future in the same way paper-based materials have traditionally been handled. Specifi c issues...
